About Diabetes Home Care

Hello! My name is Barry Buchan, a co-founder of Diabetes Home Care. I was twenty two years old in 1987 when diagnosed as a Type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetic. I was unaware of my illness until becoming ill while attending the Daytona 500 with my Father. Leaving the racetrack my father took me directly to his doctor . When the physician checked my blood sugar it was over 500 and the physician immediately gave me an insulin shot and explained my condition. The doctor` told me I had Type One diabetes and would be placed on insulin therapy.

I soon discovered I was not alone. The word "Diabetes" was new to me and I was suddenly faced with necessary changes in my life. I had to pay attention to my daily food intake and develop a daily testing and insulin injection regimen. I learned that Diabetes is a chronic, lifelong disease affecting millions of children and adults each year and healthcare professionals agree that proper self-management is essential to avoid severe diabetic complications. I was told Self-Management helps you lead a long and healthy life.

Soon after my diagnosis, I accepted a position as a traveling sales representative for a privately owned pharmaceutical company. As I traveled from state to state, I became aware of the limited availability of diabetic products and educational materials. It was difficult to purchase testing supplies and insulin while traveling or receive the level of personal service I received in my hometown of Crescent City, Florida.

Wanting to improve my level of care helped form the idea for Diabetes Home Care. After months of research, studying, and family discussion, Diabetes Home Care was opened in 1989.

As a teenager and young adult, I led an active lifestyle. I was involved in all types of sports, including swimming, surfing, skating, and volleyball. Throughout my life, whenever I faced a new challenge, new opportunity or new adventure, I would just ‘Go for it". Our visit to the Daytona 500 in 1989 was in part because of Dad and I loved racing. I attended NASCAR races at Daytona since I was in elementary school. Diabetes did not not stop my pursuit of activities and in 1994 I started racing sport cars in SCCA. Diabetes has changed my life, but did not change my lifestyle. As I learned to follow good diabetes management, I gained the freedom to continue in the activities I enjoy, as well as many new ones.

In 1993, I married my high school sweetheart, Lynn, and in 1994 we were blessed with our first  child, a daughter, Breanna. Our son Brennan was born November 1996. Attending my children’s school activities, I know the importance of maintaining good diabetic management. After twenty four years being a Type One diabetic, my Life is blessed....my future looks bright. Diabetes has presented me with a challenge to help others, which our family strives to do every day through Diabetes Home Care.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about us. I hope we have the opportunity to serve you.
