Hello! My name is Barry Buchan, a co-founder
of Diabetes Home Care. I was twenty two years old in 1987, when I was diagnosed as a Type
1 (insulin dependent) diabetic. After my family physician placed me on insulin therapy, I
discovered I was not alone. The word "Diabetes" was new to me. I was soon faced
with necessary changes in my life. I’ve learned that Diabetes is a chronic, lifelong
disease affecting millions of children and adults each year. Healthcare professionals
agree that proper self-management is essential to avoid severe diabetic complications.

Soon after my diagnosis, I accepted a position as a traveling sales
representative for a privately owned pharmaceutical company. As I traveled from state to
state, I became aware of the limited availability of diabetic products and educational
materials. When I purchased supplies out of town, it was difficult to find certain
products and the level of personal service I had grown to expect in my hometown of
Crescent City, Florida.
My frustration helped form the idea for Diabetes Home Care. After
months of research, studying, and family discussion, Diabetes Home Care was opened in
1989. Our business is staffed by family members and professional associates who provide
diabetics nationwide with excellent products and friendly service.
Diabetes Home Care is located in my hometown of Crescent City, a
rural community 40 miles northwest of Daytona Beach. We operate in a historical building
complex, adjacent to my father’s accounting office. My sister, Christine is the
General Manager, assisted by our mother, Carolyn and a dedicated staff.
Our company’s principle objective is building a relationship
of respect and confidence with the diabetic patient. Diabetes Home Care strives to help
you to better health and a simpler way of life.
We contact our customer’s regularly to assure continuity of
supplies. We keep educational material available and maintain updated knowledge on new
products. Diabetes Home Care stocks a complete and versatile inventory. We can help you
chose the supplies that are right for you. (We use what we sell.) We can also help
eliminate the maze of insurance paperwork. Our focus is not new, just old fashioned
service.
As a teenager and young adult, I led an active lifestyle. I was
involved in all types of sports, including swimming, surfing, skating, and volleyball.
Throughout my life, whenever I faced a new challenge, new opportunity or new adventure, I
would just ‘Go for it". Diabetes has changed my life, but did not change my
lifestyle. As I learned to follow good diabetes management, I gained the freedom to
continue in the activities I enjoy, as well as many new ones.
In 1993, I married my high school sweetheart, Lynn, and in 1994
we were blessed with our first daughter, Breanna. My son Brennan was born November 1996.
Life is good...my future is bright. Diabetes has presented me with a challenge to help
others, which we strive to do through Diabetes Home Care.
